Canaan Land Camp 2010

As a young boy from the age of 12 to 14, I attended Canaan Land Camp, high up on Cold Mountain in Lake Toxaway, North Carolina. It was a wonderful place to be a child and learn about the importance of keeping our forests healthy and what they can mean to all future generations of Americans interested in preserving our legacy. I was at Canaan Land during the years 1959 - 1961 and my memories of ...

Libera comes to Atlanta USA and performs an EXCELLENT concert despite the lack of time preparing for the performance. Everyone loved their songs, their special lighting and staging, and attention to detail. This is their Meet & Greet after the concert, and I took the opportunity to speak to each one of the members, thanking them for coming to this part of the United States. They are truly a spe...

Thom, Are you still planning to put High Bethel on youtube? I am turning 72 soon and have been taken off all cancer treatment after 9 years. Was on immunotherapy the last 4 which they are cautiously called a cure. I last went to High Bethel about 7 years ago when I had talked to you on the phone. Canaan Land is inscribed on my heart and I am feeling a strong urge to make that hike up the mountain to that place that I feel that I can just reach out and touch God. Please get in touch with me if you can.

Gosh that lady chaperone is watching you like a hawk. She seems mean!
Yes, that is part of her job to watch people and, also make sure the line of people KEEPS MOVING! You don't get much time to actually "talk" with each boy as much as you would like. There are many questions you would like to ask each one of these unique young boys, but time has to be kept very short. I was very much aware of the lady chaperone (there are actually two of them) and as much as she would appreciate the comments/questions to each boy, she has the responsibility of keeping backstage visitors (and that can easily reach over 100 people) moving through the long line of some 20+ boys.
me los como
que guapos por favor
omg is sam! :3 omg is JOSHUA! omg IS BEN! OMG IS LIAMMMMMMMMMM! omg is HOTNathan and omg is Alex legget O.O thank you for sharing
Thank you for this video. You really talked with all of them taking time and affection so I really appriciated listening to them
What wonderful memories your video evoked! I spent many years at Canaan Land Camp, working in the kitchen, caring for the horses and leading hikes to High Bethel. Chris and her TLC lantern coming in to Fair Haven to tell us each one good night every evening is one of the most special memories of my life.
I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed Canaan Land as much as I did. I remember the TLC lantern every night, just as you do. Canaan was a little piece of Heaven on earth, and we were all so lucky to be part of that magical time in our young lives. "To be continued...."
Sierra, I said, "Ralph, the shy one!" (In TV interviews where Ralph and two or three others are all together, Ralph usually opens up more and is quick to speak something before the other boys do. So to catch him off guard, I referred to him as "the shy one.") Ralph said, "I don't know if I'm REALLY shy." Me, "...the one who never talks in an interview." Ralph, "Noooo...." At that point, one of the staff walked up behind Ralph and said to me to please move on in the line. In the Meet & Greet lines after a concert they don't want you to spend more than about 5 seconds talking to the boys because the lines are so long with people. You have to think ahead of time what you are going to say to each singer. It's called Show Biz!
They're awesome and outgoing
Thanks for posting. I also went to camp here in the late 1950's. So nice to see it again.....looks exactly the same as I remembered.
dwj20101 My first summer was 1959, when I was 12. People knew me as Tommy Wood back then. I had a crush on Ann Pennebaker! What is your name, if I may ask?
Thom Wood I was Donna Walta then....Ann Pennebaker lived across the street from me. I think she was the reason I went there.
dwj20101 Thanks, Donna. I'm sorry but I don't remember you and it may be because I was only there for one week during that first summer for me. The counselor who got me involved was Bill Roberts, who had blond hair and wore glasses. About two years ago I returned to Canaan Land to shoot another video of hiking to High Bethel, but I haven't posted it yet. I had not been to The Top in about 30 years, and it was terrific to go back and relive all those wonderful memories of making that hike.
The South Carolina Conference of the Wesleyan Church used Canaan Land for our summer camps in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I love that place, some of the best times I had as a young teen were spent there. Thank you.
Thank you for uploading this video, I really appreciate the fact that you took a time to speak to them and make them laugh it seems that when you spoke to them they felt relaxed...you really made me laugh when you said that about Josh...Thank you again
Ah, you are welcome! That day in Atlanta was very special, and kids everywhere are fun to talk with even after they have been involved with yet another performance. As a choral director myself, I know that kids like to unwind and enjoy the moment spent with normal people who aren't always taking them so seriously. You are correct, they are more relaxed and really enjoy a good laugh at their own expense. It was a fun day!
Thanks for this video. What did you say to/about Josh that made them laugh?
I said that Josh was actually much older than he looked. I said he's actually 37!
Good day)) I'm from the Ukraine and only recently learned about Libera. I really liked Tom Cully and his last works in Libera - Ave Maria(Caccini), Air (Bach), Ave Virgo. Thanks to "Ave Maria (Caccini)" in the performance of Tom I has found Libera in RUclips. Excuse me, Thom, you might know where he is now and does what? Very interesting to know whether he participates in the life of Libera, as Ben Crowley and Stephen and the rest grown boys ... Thank you again, Thom, for your excellent work))
Hello to the Ukraine! Yes, all of us MISS Tom Cully, that's for sure. He left his mark on Libera as an intelligent and very talented young boy, and I'm not sure we will ever see the likes of that enormous talent again. He is now 19, and has recorded a few songs he wrote after leaving Libera. I think he may be entering a university to work on a music degree, as he is deeply interested in pursuing music as his life's work. I certainly wish him all the best, because the life of a musician has many ups and downs especially if you were constantly known for your performances. Success is measured by your personal determination to be the best at what you do, far more than just having a talent. Tom certainly has both, and I think he will be quite unique in whatever he chooses as his life's work. Thanks for your comment...Thom
They are truly remarkable young boys, very poised and well trained. They seem to know that they are part of something very special and humbled by the opportunity to be a in this group of other extraordinary singers. They are certainly proud of themselves and each other.
If only i could at least shake hands with them!! You are really lucky sir, and i agree you can only talk to these guys for only a few seconds.!! Josh will always be my fav.
I can't wait till I come here in the spring of next year I hope that the snow will still be around.
Gosh you REALLY missed the point I was making! I didn't get to be a successful choral director for the past 30 years by "pointing out everything that's wrong" with my students and many church choir members I've worked with. Maybe one day you'll come to understand after you've grown up.
Sorry. You're obviously not old enough to appreciate the moment, and as anyone else can PLAINLY see, these "kids" are having a good time talking to their fans. You only get a few seconds to speak to each one, and with my long experience in choral music I always try to have fun with each singer AFTER a major concert. You're not in "the business," so you wouldn't understand. Go back and read my personal comments in the description.
Why do you keep telling them they're quiet or shy or don't ever talk? How do you know? Maybe they don't like to talk. Maybe its just the way they are. Maybe it's the way they want to be. Maybe you just don't know what you're talking about. How would you like somebody pointing out everything that's wrong with you and putting it on video. You probably embarrassed them all and they probably wish you'd just go away. You're annoying and hateful.
Why are you insulting these kids? You're going up to each one and pointing out their faults. You're mean.
Well said, Josh. The history of Canaan Land goes back over a century, and I have to agree with you. Canaan Land NEVER changes because it has been handed down from generations of people who love this little piece of heaven on earth, and NO one wants to see it ever change. Canaan Land is with me every day of my life, even though I may not physically be there to enjoy its many wonders.
Oh okay... I'm so jealous because you had a chance to talk to the boys... And Josh!!... Josh is my favorite member!... I'm in love with Josh!!... Hahaha... <3
Yes, I knew that when I interviewed the boys. He's been in Libera for many years, and I decided to tease him about that by saying, "Most people don't know this, but Josh is actually 34!" He got a big laugh out of that. Every one of these boys are just reallly easy to talk with, and they enjoy a good laugh on each other. They are Classics! I'll never forget this experience of meeting them and discovering how unique each one is.
Josh isn't 34 year old. He's a young 17 year old young man.
Good question! Before I go into detail here, can we talk a few minutes on Skype, so that I can effectively answer your question?
I don't understand this ceremony Thom please send me an email to explain.
Excellent video, Thom.
miau ;D
Thanks for your comments. I can assure you that the time invested in making a trip to see one of their concerts is WELL worth the effort. There are many moments during those concerts when you are simply mesmerized by the SOUND, the LIGHTING, and the sheer PERFORMANCE of watching these amazing boys and you wish the concert would go on for hours. They captivate your mind, heart and soul in every song, and leave the audience wanting more. Now, get busy and GO SEE THEIR NEXT PERFORMANCE...!!
This is the second time I watch this and I really love your talk with the boys, makes me smile so much!
ahah seen as a marker of Ben cool? stunned, too, so I want to learn
@davidjohnmarcelino30 Ah, thanks. They were great guys, and of course they LOVE the comments from the audience after they've finished a performance, especially when they are not in the UK. I hope you get the chance to hear them live one day - there's just NOTHING like that experience!
I love Libera
